The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, on Tuesday disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari has approved of some other Nigerians to be conferred with national honours for their contributions to democracy.

Mustapha spoke at the Presidential Villa, Abuja venue of the post-humous investiture of Chief Moshood Abiola as Grand Commander of the Federal Republic; his running mate, Babagana Kingibe as Grand Commander of the Order of Niger and late human rights activist, Gani Fawehinmi, also as GCON.

He, however, did not disclose the identities of the fresh awardees.

“Further announcement on this will be made shortly,” Mustapha said in his welcome address at the ceremony attended by dignitaries across the country.

Re: June 12: Conferment of national honours on the presumed winner

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday apologised to the family of the late Chief Moshood Abiola for the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election which he won.

Buhari said his decision to revisit the annulled election was not an attempt to open an old wound but to put right what has wrongly been done.

He said it was clear that Abiola was already winning the election when the government of the day inexplicably cancelled it.

He said Nigerians will no longer tolerate such traversal of justice.

The duo of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo and ex-military president Ibrahim Babangida were conspicuously absent at the conferment of national honours on the presumed winner of June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief MKO Abiola, and others.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, informed the gathering that the two ex-presidents both expressed regrets for their individual absence.
