OSUN RERUN: APC candidate, Oyetola was declared winner of the election

Adeleke_Oyetola_APC_PDP_OSUN.png

We are here today as a result of the inconclusive election of Saturday.

Ademola Adeleke, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, had polled 254,698 votes while Isiaka Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had 254,345 votes, leaving a margin of 353. This was insufficient to declare a winner, hence the rerun.

HARASSMENT OF OBSERVERS, MEDIA - INEC to intervene in the matter.

INEC is disturbed about reports that accredited media and observers are being arrested or prevented from operating in some polling units. This is being taken up with the security agencies.#OsunDecides2018

Determined Osun voters queue despite heavy rainfall

At polling unit 17, Ward 5, Alekuwodo, Osogbo, a downpour had earlier threatened to halt the process but voters who initially ran for cover quickly returned when they noticed that others who refused to take cover had taken their spots on the queue.

By the time the rain subsided, all the voters on the queue were drenched.

Re: OSUN RERUN: APC candidate, Oyetola was declared winner of the election

According to our reporter on ground, many voters are now scared to head to polling units over fear of being attacked by hoodlums.
Despite the rain and harassment by hoodlums, voting is ongoing in some polling units.

REC assures adequate security, says ballot box snatching impossible

The Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr Olusegun Agbaje, has assured the electorate, voting at the state rerun election, of adequate security as voting process commences on Thursday.

Agbaje gave the assurance when he visited the polling unit at Ward 5, Unit 17, on Adewale Street, Alekuwodo Area in Osogbo.

He said INEC and the ad hoc staff were ready to conduct the election and that “the deployment of heavy security is an assurance that nobody or individuals can distrupt the process.

“INEC staff and ad hoc staff are prepared for the election and we have heavy security presence which will gurantee the safety of everyone.

“Anybody coming to snatch ballot boxes is putting his or life in danger.

“Party agents should conduct themselves in an orderly manner, while the electorate should remain peaceful.”

Agbaje equally charged corps members serving at polling units to take their time and make sure they verify voter cards very well before they allow them to vote.

He said “election should close by exactly 2 p.m. because of the limited units and voters”, saying he was optimistic the election would run smoothly.

Mr Emmanuel Attah, the State Cordinator of National Youth Service Corps in Osun State, said INEC had assured him of the safety of corps members that would be participating in the rerun election.

Attah said that the NYSC and corps members were apolitical and that they would carry out their task without fear or favour.

“I came to check how my children (corps members) are doing and know if they are properly taken care of.

“I am happy about how the whole election process is going and I wish the parties involved the best of luck.

“NYSC is apolitical and the corps members serving as INEC ad hoc staff are doing their duties without favour to any party.”

Money-sharing brazenly done in Olode village. The polling unit is just by the road. After voting, they go into one of the mud buildings close to the polling unit or under a tree to collect money.

‘Coup’, not election ongoing in Osun – Adeleke

The Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State. SenatorAdemola Adeleke, has described the ongoing rerun election in seven units in the state as a ‘coup ‘.

Adeleke, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone, said that supporters of the PDP were being denied access to ballot papers in the governorship rerun election.

“What is happening in Osun State now is not an election.  What we have is a coup.  That is what we are witnessing now.

“Our supporters are being harassed and are not allowed to vote at all. Let the whole world know that this is not democracy, ” he said.

Scores of registered voters in Orolu local govt are protesting after their PVCs were seized by gun-wielding thugs and they were sent away.

One of the voters who chose to remain anonymous for fear of attack said there is no election in Orolu LG.
The voter said: "There is no credible election here in Orolu. The thugs working for APC that they imported from Ikire came to our villages yesterday and sent us out. They know Orolu is the stronghold of the PDP. We took refuge in the palace of Olufon. Now, those of us in the opposition are not allowed to vote. My PVC is with them.

Commotion in Osogbo unit over gunshots

There was commotion at Unit 17, Ward 5 in Osogbo where a rerun election is taking place.

Everything was calm until about 11.50 am when gunshots rang out. The sounds came from behind a building near the polling unit, but a policeman said the gunshots came from across the road.

It started with what sounded like fireworks.

As more shots rang out, voters on queue, electoral observers and journalists scampered for safety.

The Police shot into the air in response and everyone around took cover under roofs and behind buildings.
The Police said they were on the alert and that the shots may have been fired by thugs trying to gain access to the unit.
